How to Find a Gym Buddy Who Actually Shows Up

23 October 2026 · 5 min read · by the Wavo team

A gym buddy is the difference between 'I'll go later' and 'he's already waiting at the squat rack'. The trick is finding someone whose schedule and goals line up with yours.

Look for the same gym and the same hour

The easiest gym partnerships are at the same gym, at the same time of day. Commuting to meet someone at a different gym works for a week, then life gets in the way.

Match your level and your focus

  • Level: beginners and advanced lifters can train together, but similar levels make it easier to share equipment and pace the session.
  • Focus: strength, bodybuilding, CrossFit, cardio, HIIT or yoga. Overlap at least on a few days a week.
  • Goals: building strength, losing weight or staying consistent. Say it out loud at the start.

Where to find a gym partner

  • At your gym: regulars at your time are your best candidates. Offer a spot on a heavy set; it starts more partnerships than any app.
  • Classes: group classes help you meet people who train when you do.
  • Apps: on Wavo, choose Gym, add your gym and usual time, and see gym-goers there and at gyms nearby, matched by time and level.

Agree on a few things first

  • Which days and what time, and how long sessions last.
  • What to do if one of you can't make it (message by the night before).
  • Who leads the plan for the week, so you don't spend half the session deciding.

Wave. Match. Train together.

Wavo shows you people who train at your place, at your time and level. Free.

Questions and answers

How do I find a gym buddy near me?

Look at your own gym first, at the time you usually train. On Wavo you pick your gym and time, see people who train there or nearby at a similar level, and wave; when they wave back you can chat and plan a session.

Do we need to go to the same gym?

It's much easier at the same gym. If nobody from Wavo trains at yours yet, Wavo also shows people at gyms close to you.

Is it okay to have a gym buddy as a beginner?

Yes. Choose someone at a similar level, or someone experienced who's happy to train at an easier pace and show you the basics.
