How to Meet a New Running or Gym Partner Safely

23 October 2026 · 4 min read · by the Wavo team

Training with someone new should feel easy and safe. A few simple habits make the first meet-up comfortable for both of you.

Before you meet

  • Chat first: agree on the place, time, distance and pace in messages.
  • Look for a verified badge and a clear profile photo.
  • Tell a friend where you're going, who with, and when you'll be back.

The first session

  • Meet in a busy public place: a park entrance, a lake gate or your gym's front desk.
  • Run in daylight on a route with people around, and keep your phone with you.
  • Make your own way there and back.
  • Keep the first session short. You can always plan a longer one next time.

Trust your instincts

If anything feels off, you don't owe anyone an explanation: end the session and leave. On Wavo you can block or report someone at any time, and women can choose to be matched with women only.

How Wavo keeps things safer

  • Others only see where you train, never where you live.
  • Nobody can message you until you've both waved.
  • Verified badges for people whose ID the Wavo team has checked.
  • Women-only matching, blocking and reporting.

Wave. Match. Train together.

Wavo shows you people who train at your place, at your time and level. Free.

Questions and answers

Is it safe to meet a running partner from an app?

Take the same care as meeting anyone new: chat first, meet in a busy public place in daylight, tell a friend your plan and make your own way there. On Wavo nobody can message you until you've both waved, and you can block or report anyone.

Can women choose to be matched only with women?

Yes. On Wavo, women can turn on 'only match me with women' in their profile.
